These are the last moments that Turks have to think about which country they want to live in. authoritarian or democratic. Orientation towards the West or cooperation with Russia. Conservative or secular. They are run by a charismatic politician or accountant who never arises. This is clearly a tough choice – as evidenced by the results of the first round and the polls. In the presidential race, both candidates still have a chance.
Gokhan Uzbek has a son. Adolescence. He can take her on a trip to Cappadocia. The journey takes only four hours, and it’s like a completely different world: instead of modern skyscrapers – a city carved into the rock. Instead of exhaust fumes floating over the capital – balloons drift across the sky. Instead of noise, traffic jams and crowds – peace and quiet.
They can also take the night train. Fall asleep in Ankara and wake up in heaven. Sandy beaches, warm sun, mountain scenery. It is not for nothing that Antalya is one of the ten most visited cities in the world by tourists. They can walk along the coast, pick up shells (the boy seems perceptive), talk about life and drink ayran to cool off afterwards.
They can also visit the ancient city of Termessos. After all, a history lesson will be useful to every teenager. Gokhan Uzbek would stand on the ruins of an ancient theater and proudly say that Homer wrote about this place in The Iliad. The hero, riding the winged horse Pegasus, was supposed to force the inhabitants of Termessus to surrender. He flew over the mountains on Pegasus and threw stones at the rebels.
Gökhan Özbek can go on like this. He wanted to take his son everywhere. The problem is that he can’t.
He was forbidden to leave the capital for several months. He has to report to the police station twice a week. He spent several nights in custody behind him and received a sentence – 11.5 months of life imprisonment. – It has not yet been implemented, because I have petitioned a higher court and before the European Court of Human Rights. and I am waiting. Is there any chance of acquittal? i doubt it. Not in this country, not under this president. But he says it’s always a way to delay jail time. Thanks to this, he could take his son at least on trips around Ankara.
So I’m free. But I feel quite comfortable how the authorities threw stones at the rebels

The police knocked on his house for the first time in February. The whole world experienced what was happening in southern Türkiye at that time. Almost 50,000 people died in the earthquake. Houses collapsed as if they were made of paper. Later, it will become clear to everyone that they were built beyond all standards and have no right to withstand such shocks. Residents shouted into the microphones of the journalists who came to the place what they wanted the authorities to hear: – Until the second day after the earthquake, I did not see any of you here, neither police nor soldiers. shame on you! You left us to our fate!
– Due to the devastating effect of the tremors and bad weather in the first few days, we couldn’t work as we wanted. I am sorry for that,” Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded at a press conference three weeks after the tragedy, publicly admitting that he had failed. He was speaking to the people of Adiyaman province in the southeastern part of the country, which suffered the most damage in the elections. Five years ago, he decisively defeated his rival here, and this year his employees can no longer be sure of the outcome.
