A powerful storm destroyed the most important symbol of freedom in Sierra Leone
The people of Sierra Leone have been devastated by the loss of the recent storm. As a result of a violent phenomenon, the so-called cotton tree – the most important symbol of freedom – broke and fell. As the head of state said, “a great loss for the nation.”
On Wednesday, a giant tree dubbed the “Cotton Tree”, which has grown in the capital of Sierra Leone for centuries and symbolizes the freedom of its people, was cut down on Wednesday. The tree shattered and fell due to a very strong force Storm With heavy rain. Only its base remained in place.
The country’s president, Julius Maada Bio, said via social media that the felling of the famous tree was “a great loss for the nation”.
It was decided to remove the plant. Crowds of residents came to the place, who wanted to take a last look and say goodbye to the symbolic tree.
It may have been 400 years old
The cotton tree is actually a soft tree with five stamens, popularly known as the kapok tree. It was one of the most important facilities in a country founded by freed American slaves. It is estimated that they came to this region in the eighteenth century. According to the story, the early inhabitants took shelter under the branches of a large tree from the rain, and said prayers of thanksgiving for the opportunity to live freely.
It is not known exactly how old this tree was, but it is believed that it may have been more than 400 years old. It was 70 meters high and 15 meters wide, and it was located in the center of the roundabout in the city center of Freetown, and its longest branches reached above the buildings. Those closest are badly damaged by fallen plant debris. A similar scenario happened to nearby cars. Fortunately, no one was injured.
Services began on Thursday with the removal of the broken parts of the symbolic tree.
